A MOVIE REVIEW
When I received my invitation to a screening of "Obvious Child", I'll admit that I hadn't heard anything at all about the the film. I also was very unfamiliar with the lead actress Jenny Slate. I read over the description and when I later had to recall what the movie was going to be about, my reply was "It's something about a lady getting pregnant. I think she's a teacher or therapist either pregnant by her student or client". Not only was I still unclear of the plot, but I clearly didn't know what to expect.
I must say that before the opening credits finished, I was already laughing and entertained before anyone was even visible on the screen. That was due in part to the leading lady, Slate, actually playing a stand up comic. She does get pregnant and as my title suggests, the movie brushes on the abortion topic.
In no way is this movie a documentary but it follows a funny and witty lady's week as she deals with breakups, one night stands, pregnancy scares etc like many women deal with. It's just a comedy, romance about a real life. It's much like the classic "Falling Down". It's something we all can relate to.
If you're looking for a heavy film about abortion, this isn't it. If you're looking for falling out of your chair comedy, this isn't it. If you're looking for the "Dirty Dancing" type of romance, well this isn't it either.
But, if you have ever went through anything and you just want to be able to find a little humor in it, then this is for you. It is a good film!
